Tsunami National Contact (TNC)/ Tsunami Warning Focal Point (TWFP)

In the framework of IOC/NEAMTWS, the National Institute for Earth Physics has an active role and the following responsibilities:

  • Tsunami National Contact (TNC)
  • Tsunami Warning Focal Point (TWFP)
  • National Tsunami Warning Centre ,

NIEP has a very well developed infrastructure (specialists in seismology, physics and geophysics, expertise of over 120 years in the field of seismology, has a dedicated networks for monitoring seismic and rapid assessment of the effects of the tsunami) required for rapid evaluation of tsunami.

NIEP has an information center which is designed for rapid alerting of authorities in case of a tsunami in the Black Sea region or at global level. For events that occur in the Black Sea or 100 km inland, NIEP generates alerts to the Romanian authorities. For seismic events that can generate tsunamis, NIEP receives information from tsunami international alerting centers, disseminates information, making a report that it is sent to the Romanian authorities.

NIEP is the Tsunami National Contact (TNC) and Tsunami Warning Focal Points (TWFP) of Romania for the The Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System in the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas (ICG/NEAMTWS). The Tsunami Warning Focal Point receives international tsunami warnings from the NEAMTWS or other regional warning centres.
